As the temperatures drop and the days grow shorter, it's easy to forget about the importance of sun protection. After all, the sun doesn't feel as strong, and the risk of sunburns can feel like a distant memory. However, it's important to remember that just because the weather is colder doesn't mean that the sun's harmful UV rays are any less powerful. The sun can be just as damaging to our skin in the winter as it is in the summer. That's why it's important to ensure that you protect your skin all year round.

At Mount Nittany Health Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgery (RCS), we understand the importance of skincare, and we're dedicated to helping our patients achieve and maintain healthy, beautiful skin. One of the best ways to do that is by practicing good sun protection habits, even in the winter.

Sunscreen is an essential part of any winter skincare routine. Not only does it protect against UVB rays, which are responsible for sunburn, but it also protects against UVA rays, which are responsible for aging and certain types of skin cancer. When selecting a sunscreen, it's important to look for one that offers hydration during winter months, as well as broad-spectrum protection, and has an SPF of at least 30.

Another important aspect of winter sun protection is to limit your time in the sun, especially during peak hours when the sun is strongest (between 10 am and 4 pm). This is especially important for people with sensitive skin or at a higher risk for skin cancer.

It's also important to remember that the sun's rays can reflect off snow and ice, which can increase your risk of sun damage. This is why it's important to protect your skin by wearing protective clothing such as gloves, scarves, and hats.

Proper hydration is also key for maintaining healthy skin during the winter months. Cold weather can dry out your skin, making it feel tight and itchy. To combat this, make sure you're drinking plenty of water and using a good moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated.

At Mount Nittany Health RCS, we also offer a range of other treatments and procedures to help improve the appearance and health of your skin. For example, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and laser treatments can help to brighten and smooth the skin, while Botox and fillers can be used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. These treatments can be especially beneficial during the winter months when the skin is more susceptible to dryness and damage.
