Complements April is Rosacea Awareness Month

04/26/18

According to the National Rosacea Society, more than 16 million Americans are impacted by rosacea. Rosacea Awareness Month, recognized in the month of April, works to educate the public on the impact of this common, chronic inflammatory skin condition.

In the beginning stages, rosacea causes redness, or blushing, on the face. This redness may become permanent as the small blood vessels of the face dilate. More serious cases can cause small red bumps or pustules. Some people can also develop small visible red vessels known as telangiactasias.

Although the cause of rosacea is unknown, there are certain lifestyle and environmental triggers that can cause flare-ups. Common triggers include:

  • Sun exposure and hot weather
  • Stress
  • Exercise
  • Hot tubs
  • Hormones
  • Wind
  • Certain food and drinks such as spicy food, chocolate and alcohol
  • Certain skin care or cosmetic products

Managing rosacea triggers can help keep your symptoms under control. Mount Nittany Physician Group Reconstructive & Cosmetic Surgery also offers several treatments to manage your rosacea. Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL, uses light waves to target hemoglobin in broken blood vessels to help lessen the appearance of rosacea and broken capillaries. Other treatments include chemical peels and skin care products to treat your specific skin concerns.
