Complements What you need to know about exfoliation

When I ask my clients how often they exfoliate, I typically receive the answer, “Not as often as I should.” How often you exfoliate really depends on your skin type and condition, but as a general guideline, two to three times per week is average.

Exfoliation is key to keeping your skin healthy. When you use products without exfoliating, those products are just sitting on the dead skin cells and are much less effective. Products need to be applied to “live” skin cells in order to achieve the best results.

You can exfoliate your skin by using physical or chemical exfoliation. Physical exfoliation refers to the manual scrubbing of a product with or without a facial brush, as well as, microdermabrasion treatments. Chemical exfoliation refers to chemical peels and/or certain chemicals used on the face to dissolve more of the dead skin cells at a deeper level. These usually consist of alpha, beta hydroxyl, glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids.

Whatever method you use, your skin will be vibrant and healthy. Don’t forget to apply a moisturizer and sunscreen afterward to nourish and protect your skin!
