Complements A fresh start: 2017 is going to be your best skin year yet

01/26/17

Make 2017 the year you finally get your best skin ever! Whether you want to re-evaluate your current skin care regimen or treat a specific skin care concern, our team at Mount Nittany Physician Group Reconstructive & Cosmetic Surgery is here to help.

Happy skin is bright, glowing skin and there are four steps you can take to reveal your healthiest skin yet. I know I repeat these tips in some of my articles, but by using these simple and important steps, you will notice such a difference.

  • Exfoliate regularly. Your skin produces new cells every single day, but they can get damaged. Cell turnover slows with age, which leads to dull skin with more fine lines and wrinkles. To regain that dewy, healthy glow, exfoliate at least once or twice a week. Exfoliating helps slough off dead, dulling skin cells so shiny new cells can move to the surface.
  • To go along with exfoliating, you can add a retinol product into your skin care regimen. It’s like a secret weapon for you face. It stimulates the production of new skin cells. It can also help to fade dark spots resulting from photo-aging, hyperpigmentation, hormonal changes and blemish scars. Prescription-strength retinoids renew the skin and treat acne, reduce the appearance of fine lines and help with skin discoloration. There are so many to choose from and different strengths, if you’re a newbie to this product then let’s chat!
  • Drink lots of water. Ideally you should be drinking half your body weight (in pounds) in ounces a day. When you become dehydrated, your skin is dry, itchy, irritated and can actually produce extra oil. Too much salt, caffeine, sugar and alcohol can affect your skin, so make sure you are balancing it all with your water intake.
  • Wear sunscreen year-round. Just 20 minutes in the sun can cause damage to your skin, leading to hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles. Be sure your sunscreen has an SPF of 15 or more.
