Are you one of those people that is constantly touching their face and/or picking at your skin? You probably haven’t thought about what this is really doing to your skin. This is a tough one, but as hard as it may be, you need to fight the urge to pick. Here’s why.

Picking can cause more breakouts. When you’re using your hands, you are more than likely introducing bacteria from your fingers into the pimple. Picking can deepen the bacteria and cause red, inflamed and swollen bumps.

It can cause scabs, which are far harder to cover up rather than just using concealer to cover up a pimple. Scabs will last much longer on your face than the small pimple you began with, and once you have a scab, you will then have the urge to pick the scab. This just causes a vicious cycle of picking.

Picking causes inflammation that can cause post-hyper pigmentation. This is the discoloring of a pimple-sized area that can take a couple years to go away. And your number one reason why you shouldn’t pick: it leads to scarring. It’s best to let a pimple run through its life span. If it is popped improperly, it can linger for weeks and lead to scarring.

If you really need to pop a pimple, leave it to the pros. Dermatologists and well-trained aestheticians can properly extract the pimple for you. It’s not worth the risk to pick; just keep your hands off!
